Daily Word February 22, 2011 - "Confidence"

Psalm 17:3-5
"You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night, you have tested me by night, you have tested me, and you will find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.  With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent.  My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped."
Confidence is an interesting thought.  Some read these words and believe that the psalmist was confident in his works to stand before God.  However, the psalmist was David and so such a notion would be misguided at best.  David knew his inadequacies before a Holy God, as they continually played out from day to day.  So why confidence in this passage?  He was saying that he was being sure to examine himself continually, to keep a short sin account before his God, so that he did not fear God's examination. Ever do something wrong and have that continual ache in your stomac as you awaited the coming of a loved one, when you knew that it could get dicey?  How much greater the feeling of confidence when you know that your actions have actually pleased that one!  David wanted God to examine him because he knew that he had already examined himself.
