Daily Word February 5, 2011 - "Psalm 9"

Psalm 9:1-2
"I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.  I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High."
These first verses are the theme statement for all of Psalm 9.  The psalmist, David, is saying that the Lord is worthy of his praise in good times and in bad.  "When the enemies turn their back", when in oppression (vs. 9), in affliction (vs. 13), and even in death; the Lord is worthy of our praise.  It is easy, I think, to praise God when everything is going well.  When everyone likes you, when life at home is peaceful, when the kids are obedient, when there is money in the bank account, etc.  But what about when you don't feel like it?  What about when the trials of life, the enemy, and even our friends and family abound on every side?  The psalmist has two pieces of advice when encountering these times.  First, give thanks to the Lord with your whole heart.  Get engaged in worship!  Tell God how thankful you are that He is in control and in charge.  Tell God how thankful you are He has saved you from the miry clay.  Second, recount all of His wonderful deeds.  Keep a journal of all the things that God has done for you.  When you look back, you find that God is not slack on blessing His people.  When you look back, you find you have much more to be thankful for than not.
